Disquiet over choice of Kisii spokesman

There is growing disquiet within the ODM-Kenya over the endorsement of an MP as a spokesman for the Kisii region.

The endorsement of South Mugirango MP, Mr Omingo Magara, has elicited mixed reactions from local leaders with some warning that the move was ill advised.

Kanu national deputy organizing secretary, Mr Manson Nyamweya, former minister, Prof Sam Ongeri and LDP official, Mr Timothy Bosire, warned of possible fall out. The leaders alleged that the elevation of Magara was a plot by the Ford-People legislator to give himself undue political mileage.

"Why appoint a prefect? In ODM-Kenya, we should all be equals and avoid creating power brokers because the move will break our unity," said Nyamweya.

Ongeri cautioned against what he termed "misuse of the community’s goodwill in the ODM-Kenya".

"The Kisii are for total change in leadership and they want to achieve that through the ODM-Kenya, but we will not accept sideshows that will cause divisions as we approach the General Election," warned Ongeri, the Nyaribari Masaba Kanu branch chairman.

But those who attended the Kisii meeting where the resolution to endorse Magara was passed defended their decision and vowed to remain united under him.

"Magara has not imposed himself on us. We merely resolved to appreciate his recognition and nomination by ODM-Kenya to represent Nyanza in key consultations," Mr Charles Onyancha a party official said.

He was with former ministers, Mr Chris Obure and Mr Joseph Kiangoi and party official, Mr Richard Onyonka.

Meanwhile, three MPs have asked Health minister, Mrs Charity Ngilu, to quit Narc and join ODM-Kenya.

MPs, Mr Daudi Mwanzia (Machakos town), Mr Charles Kilonzo (Yatta) and Mr Itwiku Mbai (Masinga) said Ngilu’s political clout had waned.

"She should re-invent herself politically by joining the winning outfit," said Mwanzia.

Speaking in Machakos town, The MPs described Ngilu’s party Narc where she is the chairperson, as an empty shell.

They asked Ngilu to support Mwingi North MP Kalonzo Musyoka in his presidential bid saying that he was more popular across the region.

Mwanzia said Ngilu should join ODM-Kenya to salvage her political career.
