Woman arrested for selling baby

A woman, who allegedly sold her three-month-old daughter for Sh2,500 in Kisii, was arrested yesterday.

Police boss Peter Maloba said his officers are also searching for the buyer and the baby, after the mother allegedly confessed to the deed.  According to Maloba, the 29-year-old mother said she sold her daughter to a middle-aged woman at Eaka village in Tabaka township, Gucha District.

She said she was pushed to the act by poverty, claiming that she had gone to her parents’ home after a fight with her husband, but they turned her away. The woman is said to have given birth to three other children out of wedlock, who are staying with her parents. Her family allegedly turned her away, saying they did not want another burden, and that she should reconcile with her husband.

Maloba said the woman’s husband, Thomas Mutari Omoke, reported the alleged sale of their baby to the police after learning about it from relatives. Omoke gave the name of baby as Emily Motari. He claimed that his wife fled their matrimonial home at Daraja Mbili after telling him that she was going to see her other children.

The police boss said yesterday his officers had already moved to Tabaka to trace the said buyer and baby. He said they had received a tip-off from the public that the woman still had the baby with her.
