Two Killed in Church Attack as Political Tensions Rise

Six people were killed yesterday morning, two of them inside a church, in what security officials described as political violence.Kisii District Commissioner Osman Warfa confirmed the killings and said two of the victims were killed as they prayed inside Bogiakumu Catholic Church in Bonchari constituency.

The other four were attacked at dawn in Riana in the same constituency on suspicion of witchcraft. Their bodies were burnt beyond recognition.One of the dead, identified as Mr Onuong'a Nyatangi, was a retired civil servant who had expressed an interest in vying for the Bogiakumu civic ward on a Kanu ticket.

Mr Nyatangi and Mr Samwel Mirieri were killed when a gang armed with crude weapons stormed into the church and attacked them in the full view of other worshippers. A number of other worshippers were seriously injured.Mr Nyatangi was at the time of his death a top Kenya Football Federation official in Nyanza. Kisii KFF Chairman Samuel Nyangeso expressed shock and dismay at the death of his treasurer, saying political scores could not be settled by murdering people in cold blood.
