Copa Coca-Cola Starts in Kisumu And Nyeri Today

The inaugural Copa Coca-Cola secondary schools' football tournament kicks off today in Nyeri and Kisumu. Over total of 24 secondary schools have entered the Nyeri tournament with a big entry also lined up in Kisumu in the Sh10 million tournament organised by Coca-Cola East and Central Africa in line with similar tournaments which started in South America and have spread globally.
The tournament involves both boys' and girls' competitions. In Nyeri, today's competition will be held at the Nyeri Technical Training Institute and is scheduled to start at 9.00 am.
Only Form One and Form Two students will be allowed to compete as there is an age limit for the teams. "We want to nature talent among these young people who will be the leaders of the future. Despite that, we want to boost football in the country by training youth from their younger years like other countries which do well in the sport," said Nelson Githinji, the head of Public Policy, Government and Corporate Relations at Coca-Cola East and Central Africa, said this week while launching the tournament in Nairobi .
The schools which will snatch the top position will be rewarded with playing kit and trophies.The tournament is being played across the company's six bottler regions of Nairobi, Coast, Rift Valley, Mt Kenya, Kisii and Equator (Kisumu and the surrounding areas).Tomorrow, the tournament moves to Kisii (Kisii High School) and Eldoret (Wareng High School).
The structure of the competition has taken the form of weekly knockouts between teams in each region.The semi finals will have 24 teams who will be fully kitted by Coca-Cola.The finals will see four teams - two girls' and two boys' - battle it out for the top position from each region. Two winners will emerge from the boys' and a girls' tournaments which will be rewarded with a trophy and a voucher for Sh100,000 worth of sports equipment from the Nairobi Sports House.
