Telkom Merges Phone Centres

Telkom Kenya has transferred its Kisii telephone exchange to Kisumu as part of its restructuring process.

More than 100 telephone operators have been moved from Kisii to Kisumu and other towns as a result. The move, carried out on Thursday last week, is part of ongoing efforts by the corporation to merge some of its exchange centres to promote efficiency.

Telkom previously had telephone exchange centres in each district. It now aims at having only six countrywide with a state-of-the-art service capability. But the move has sparked protests from the public who complain of regular communication failures.

Customers in Nyamira District have, for example, reported difficulties in receiving external calls and making reverse calls.

The corporation's assistant general manager in charge of operations, Mr Nahashon Oguya, declined to comment on the complaints, but promised to issue a comprehensive response later."

He, however, said that the changes would make the distribution of telephone services easier since new and more efficient technologies were being employed. On Sunday, the corporation announced changes in its traditional code numbers for districts.
The telecommunications network will also be changed to suit the introduction of new national area codes.

Under the new mode, a number of former autonomous access regions have been merged, bringing together as many as 12 exchanges into one station.

For example, Kisii, Keroka and Kilgoris, which had different codes each, now share a common code.
