Safaricom boosts Gusii races

Safaricom has donated Sh800,000 to Kebirigo Athletics Club for three road races in Kisii District.

The first race, the Safaricom Bamba Kisii 10km race, will be held on August 18. The other two races — Sambaza Gucha 10km and Safaricom Kebirigo 10km — on September 8 and October 6.

Handing over the cheque, Safaricom chief executive officer Michael Joseph said the races were remarkable on their athletics calendar.

He said the aim of investing in the races was to discover budding talent that can sustain the superior achievements by sportsmen and women for a longer time.

He cited Commonwealth Games silver medallist, Helen Cherono, as one of the success stories of the Gusii road races.

He said it was after winning last year’s Gucha race that she went on to excel in the Commonwealth Games early this year in Melbourne.

Joseph said his company was in the frontline of promoting athletics and will be involved in next year’s World Cross Country Championships in Mombasa.

"As you all know we will host the World Cross Country Championships next March and as a truly Kenyan company, we are committed to helping athletes," he said.

Receiving the cheque Athletics Kenya public relations officer, Peter Angwenyi, thanked Safaricom saying the sponsorship will help develop talent.
