A Kisii hospital yesterday refused to allow the family of former MP Kitutu Masaba MP George Anyona to clear a mortuary bill in readiness for his delayed burial. Five family members led by Mr Nelson Ondieki Moseti, were served with an invoice of Sh47,250 but were told to produce a burial certificate before they could be allowed to clear it. The bill was for six months that Mr Anyona’s body has stayed at Nyangena hospital as they battled to exonerate him over Sh2.3 million missing from a women's group bank account..
Speaking to journalists at the hospital after viewing the body, Mr Ondieki said the family had left the task of tracing the whereabouts of the missing Chabumba Women's Group funds to the Government. We are ready to bury Anyona, but the Government has to assist members of the Chabumba Women's Group trace the money and be paid, said Mr Ondieki. He was accompanied by sisters Nyerere, 80, Nyaboke and Kwamboka.
His brother, Mr Stephenson Mageto, stopped any burial arrangements until the money was accounted for. A court cleared Mr Anyona, who died in a road accident in Nairobi late last year, of the blame two months ago, but Mr Mageto has remained mum on the burial issue. Yesterday, Kisii leaders welcomed the family’s decision.
