Anyonas burial now set for June 13

Former Kitutu Masaba MP George Anyona will now be buried on June 13. Nyamira District Commissioner Jamleck Baruga made the announcement following thorough consultations with family members. Baruga said Anyona had been exonerated from the controversy surrounding the Sh2.3 million Chabumba women group funds. He, however, said after the burial, those behind embezzlement of the funds in question would be arrested and prosecuted. Anyona died last November in a road accident on his way home from The Mater Hospital.

The DC made the announcement during Madaraka Day celebrations at Nyamira sports grounds yesterday. He also appealed to the committee which had initially organised Anyona’s burial, before it was stopped, to complete its task. He asked Kisii MPs to assist in giving Anyona a decent burial. Local leaders led by West Mugirango MP Henry Obwocha, who was present during the celebrations, said they would mobilise other leaders.

The DC moved the crowd when he said that Anyona’s widow, Mokeira, was currently living in a shanty in Mosocho waiting for her husband to be buried before she could go back to Nairobi. Anyona’s burial was stopped by his elder brother, Mr Stephenson Mageto, after he moved to court to have the deceased’s name cleared of claims of embezzling the women group’s funds, where he was patron. Exonerating Anyona, the Kisii High court named three women as the persons behind the withdrawal of the money in question.
