Internet services offered by PCK fail to connect

Postal Corporation of Kenya (PCK) Internet services in rural areas have collapsed.

An Israel Internet service provider recently discontinued its contract to the corporation over unpaid bills and this affected its capacity to provide the services.

Despite assurance from authorities that Safaricom had re-installed the service, most of the computer rooms were locked with notices on the doors indicating that the machines were out of order.

The collapse has affected journalists, civil society organisations, churches and NGOs.

Journalists from South Nyanza and parts of Rift Valley Province have been forced to travel to Kisii to file their stories from private cyber cafes.

PCK Internet cafes in Nyamira, Migori, Transmara, Homa Bay, Rachuonyo, Buret, Gucha, Mbita, Keroka, Rongo, Rapogi and Kehancha, were closed down.

A PCK official in Kisii said the Safaricom services had only been installed in major towns.
