Company denies distributing fake seeds

Kenya Seed Company has denied allegations that it was selling uncertified maize seeds in South Nyanza.

The company’s regional marketing manager, Mr Albert Sumba, said the matter had not been brought to attention of the management.

He said the company had assured farmers that they were being supplied with certified quality maize seeds. Sumba advised farmers to buy seeds from registered stockists and not from open air markets whose source of seeds was suspect.

The manager was reacting to allegations made by a section of leaders during a farmers’ field day at Nyamache divisional headquarters in Gucha District.

The farmers alleged that the company was behind the sale and distribution of fake maize seeds.

Nyamache Town Council Chairman, Mr Buge Nyangiri had demanded that the company compensate farmers for losses incurred following a poor harvest.

"The claims that we are behind the distribution of fake seeds are unfounded," Sumba said.

He appealed to farmers to report to the company’s regional office in Kisii Town and record complaints for fast investigations.
