Obwocha declares himself Nyachae successor

Planning minister, Mr Henry Obwocha, says he is the best suited to take over from his roads colleague, Mr Simeon Nyachae as the leader of the Abagusii.

The minister said in the current Ford-People hierarchy and seniority in Kisii politics he was poised to succeed Nyachae and fit comfortably in his shoes.

He, however, said that he would not impose himself on the people but would seek their support when the right time comes.

Obwocha was speaking during the burial of the late Aori Nyaboga at Nyakeore village in his West Mugirango constituency after being taken to task by a section of mourners to quit politics along with Nyachae.

His constituents also took him to task over alleged mismanagement of the Constituency Development Fund.

The incensed mourners told Obwocha to his face to quit politics over poor performance and for neglecting their concerns.

Obwocha, however, downplayed their protests by suggesting that he was heading for the Ford-People top seat following the impending retirement of Nyachae.

He told the mourners that even if they go round all the corners of Gusiiland looking for a suitable replacement for Nyachae, they would be told that it was Obwocha.

The minister said those calling for his political exit, were afraid and threatened by his rising political career.

He asked the Kisii to remain united in Ford-People if they expected to have a bargaining power in any future government.

He also asked the community to rally its support behind President Kibaki for another term in reciprocation for the development projects he has initiated.

The mourners who included his political opponents, Mr Dennis Abincha, Mr Charles Ongoto and former nominated MP Ms Catherine Nyamato, however, said Obwocha and Nyachae were a liability.

Abincha said since the two joined politics in 1992, they had not initiated serious projects.

He said instead the two leaders had used the community’s name for their personal interests and that the trend had to be stopped.

They said Obwocha has never called a meeting to find a lasting solution to the low standards of education in the area.

They also claimed the devolved funds were being disbursed selectively and demanded for immediate dissolution of the two CDF committees.

In response, Obwocha dismissed his critics saying nobody had the mandate to tell him when to quit.

He said that it was only the people of West Mugirango who had the power to keep him out of politics.
