More than 2,000 pupils have been affected by the move. By yesterday morning, seven proprietors and teachers had been arrested.
The district commissioner, Abdullahi Leloon, and district education officer James Ochieng confirmed that the culprits were locked up at the Kisii Police station.
"They are from Rianarogi, Joyland, Gesero Junior and St Charles Viewpoint Academy in Suneka division and St Augustine Raganga Academy of Mosocho," Leloon said.
They were expected to appear in court late yesterday afternoon on charges of running unregistered schools.
The two, who are members of the District Education Board (DEB), told journalists that most of the blacklisted schools lacked qualified teachers and adequate facilities.
Leloon said there were at least 114 unregistered schools in the area in December last year.
"Some 43 schools adhered to our requirements but the others failed to do so," he added.
The DC said they were looking for the other culprits, who have gone into hiding.
"We are not going to allow unscrupulous individuals to operate schools in shacks or in tiny rooms at the back of shops and other awkward buildings," he said.
But as the crackdown continued, some of the parents demanded that the education officers be compelled to explain why they have been condoning such schools.
"Some of the proprietors might have been operating under the protection of education officers," said a parent.
