Officer ‘fined’ Sh0.3m for defiling minor

A senior police officer has been fined Sh300,000 for impregnating a Class Six pupil.

A council of elders imposed the ‘fine’ on the officer attached to a police station in Nyamira District. The officer is a neighbour to the minor’s parents in the station’s living quarters.

The girl, a daughter to a retired police officer, has since dropped out of school.

Sources told The Standard that the officer has paid Sh120,000 and will clear the balance in the next two months. An officer privy to the arrangement showed journalists a copy of the agreement signed by both parties to settle the issue out of court.

Confirming the incident, local acting police division commander, Mr Timothy Kivuva, said his hands were tied because the agreement was consented to by the girl’s parents.

"It is regrettable that informed parents are ruining the future of their children for monetary gain," he said.

Kivuva said they could only prosecute the officer if the parents complained and recorded a statement.

The minor is living with her parents within the station and junior officers have complained that action had not been taken against the culprit.

Initially, the parents complained that police had refused to assist them since the culprit was their boss.

"It is humiliating that a senior officer can stoop this low while we are disciplined for minor offences like being drunk," one officer said.

Recently, the same officer was on compulsory leave after being implicated in a scandal where female remandees were sneaked out of the cells at night for sex.
