Maize Farmers Demand Delayed Pay

More than 100 farmers yesterday marched to the Kisii district commissioner's office, demanding payment for produce delivered to national silos.

The farmers said the National Cereals and Produce Board owed them Sh10 million for maize, finger millet and beans delivered four months ago.

They also complained that the local depot was yet to start buying maize, two weeks after the Government ordered them opened.

Their spokesman, Mr Moses Omayio, also told district commissioner Abdillahi Leelon they had delivered the produce to the local depot in September.

They demanded that the manager be removed. The DC appealed for calm and said he would channel their grievances to the authorities concerned.
In Nandi District, maize farmers yesterday protested at the exploitation by middlemen who have invaded the area.

The farmers said the Sh750 offered for a 90-kg bag was too low and appealed to the cereals board to open up more buying centres in the region.

"The traders are taking advantage of congestion at the NCPB depots to exploit farmers," said a spokesman, Mr Reuben Busienei.
