Nyachae Discloses Anti-Kanu Strategy

Former Finance Minister Simeon Nyachae admitted in public yesterday that Kanu rebels were forming an alliance with key opposition leaders to remove their party from power in the next General Election.

He told a public meeting in Kisii that the alliance includes leader of the Official Opposition Mwai Kibaki, Ford Kenya chairman Kijana Wamalwa, Social Democratic Party leader Charity Ngilu and former Minister Kipkalya Kones, who is a Kanu rebel.

The remarks come shortly after Mr. Kibaki's tour of Kisii last week, where he hinted that he was working with Mr. Nyachae on an alliance formula.

Yesterday, Mr. Nyachae said the Abagusii will support an opposition candidate in the South Mugirango constituency by-election scheduled for January 12.

He was addressing a funds drive at Suneka Secondary School in aid of Bonchari Constituency Education Bursary Fund. "We have sat together to negotiate how we shall go about this issue, and once we conclude our talks, we shall come out in public and tell people the way forward," he said. The Nyaribari Chache MP was accompanied by other MPs in the rebel camp - Mr. Jimmy Angwenyi and Mr. Zebedeo Opore Ð and Ford Kenya's Henry Obwocha.

He continued: "For now we urge all Kenyans to give their total support to politicians fighting against bad governance ."

He said that Kanu was full of untrustworthy people and that the ruling party's reputation was beyond redemption.

Mr. Nyachae condemned the Kenya Broadcasting Corporation for allowing itself to be used by President Moi as a propaganda machine to mislead Kenyans that the Head of State was still popular among Kenyans. "I shall mobilise members of Parliament to lobby for the Nation TV and Radio, Kiss 100, Citizen TV and Radio, Capital FM and KTN to be allowed countrywide coverage to tell Kenyans the truth.

During the funds drive, Sh801,966 was raised, with Mr. Nyachae donating Sh310,000.

Mr. Nyachae urged Special Branch officers to report to the President the "real situation on the ground" that he was no longer wanted by Kenyans.

He once again denied that had ever insulted the President, saying: "I have always told him that his government has failed since it is harbouring thieves."

On the constitution, Mr. Nyachae said that him and other Kisii MPs will fully support the Ufungamano Group since President Moi cannot trusted anymore.

Mr. Angwenyi and Mr. Obwocha said they were supporting Mr. Nyachae not because he was a Kisii, but a National Leader with experience which can be used to bring about good governance.

Mr. Obwocha and Mr. Opore urged the Ufungamano Group to stand firm against being lured by the Ghai group since Moi can use the group to mess the country again.
