The war of words between the two Kanu MPs began when Mr. Nyachae, while contributing to Finance Bill, 2000, told the government to spend collected revenue prudently. The former finance minister said it did not make sense for cabinet ministers to use fuel-guzzling four-wheel-drive vehicles travelling across the country to settle political scores.
"Do you provide core services to the public by giving ministers Toyota Land Cruisers to visit Kisii District to condemn Nyachae? You are wasting your time and government money!," he said. Prof. Ongeri then shot up on a Point of Order to demand that Mr. Nyachae substantiates his remarks. There was applause and confusion. The temporary deputy speaker, Mr. Samuel Poghisio (Kacheliba, Kanu), struggled to assert control.
Mr. Nyachae reiterated that Government vehicles had been used to visit Kisii to undermine him and challenge his political standing. He said Prof Ongeri would continue criss-crossing the district condemning him because he had nothing else to talk about.
"Ongeri is my neighbour at home; and it is true GK cars have been used to condemn me at home. I want to remind you that I will always be your mother and father because you have nothing else to talk about!", said an angry Mr. Nyachae. Some MPs told the two to keep Kisii politics out of Parliament. Opposition MPs urged them to continue.
Prof Ongeri: "Mr. Speaker, can he substantiate what he has said about being my mother and father?"
Mr. Nyachae: "There is no doctor here to confirm whether I am his father. I am talking about prudent use of public money."
