MP Bans Visits By Nyachae

Threats of chaos during the run-up to next month's South Mugirango by-election were made yesterday. At the same time, Bomachoge MP Zephania Nyang'wara and Kisii Central Kanu Branch officials warned Mr. Nyachae against rebuking President Moi.

Mr. Nyang'wara, addressing a news conference at Parliament Buildings, banned Mr. Nyachae from stepping into Gucha District "or we unleash terror on him".

The by-election, set for January 12, follows the death of MP Enock Magara on October 16.

"He (Nyachae) should not step in Gucha as it is a Kanu zone. This is because of what his supporters did to me during the burial of Mr. Magara," Mr. Nyang'wara said.

He added: "We will see who has stronger men on the ground."

On Sunday, Mr. Nyachae dismissed President Moi's attacks on him while on a recent trip to Kisii saying he did not require Government clearance to run for the presidency.

President Moi had on Friday said the former Finance Minister was not a serious contender for the presidency

Kisii Kanu Branch officials Geoffrey Asanyo (chairman), organising secretary John Anunda and activist Sam Nyamweya promised Kanu will win the by-election.
The officials claimed Mr. Nyachae did not have support at the grassroots.

However, former National Development Party secretary-general Charles Maranga said Mr. Nyachae should be allowed to pursue his ambition.

"President Moi has no chance of vying for Presidency so he should let those who are interested to speak their minds. Is he scared of Nyachae?"
