Keep Off, Minister And MP Warned

Cabinet Minister Chris Obure and Bomachoge Kanu MP Zephania Nyag'wara have been warned to keep off South Mugirango or face the wrath of the people.

Opposition officials led by Ford-Kenya South Mugirango by-election candidate James Omingo Magara accused Mr. Obure, Mr. Nyang'wara and Mr. Geoffrey Asanyo, the Kisii Kanu branch chairman, of scheming to cause violence at Ford-Kenya strongholds today to favour Kanu candidate David Kombo.

However, Mr. Magara, a brother of former MP Enock Magara, who died in a car crash, vowed to ensure that the elections were incident-free. "We have alerted the police and we are ready," he said.

The officials, who included the Gucha Ford-K chairman Mr. Francis Ongoto, Mr. Zedekiah Orioki, Mr. Hezekiah Abuya and Mr. Reuben Oyondi, dared the Kanu leaders to set foot in South Mugirango.

They appealed to voters to turn up in large numbers from 6am today to cast their votes for Mr. Magara.

Mr. Orioki and Mr. Abuya said they had alerted the police that Mr. Obure and his group were plotting to disrupt voting after sensing defeat following two successful Opposition rallies at Omogenda and Tabaka.

They accused the government of taking sides in the by-election by protecting Mr. Obure and Mr. Nyang'wara instead of arresting Mr. Nyang'wara for the disruption of a Ford-K rally at Riosiri.

The leaders cautioned Mr. Obure against "importing counting clerks from his Bobasi constituency to rig the election at Nduru Secondary School where the counting takes place".

Others in the race for the seat include Mrs Rose Okemwa of Kenya Social Congress, Mr. Gilbert Ombasa (Ford-Asili), Mr. Samson Sawe (National Labour Party), Mr. Joel Makanga (Ford-People) and Mr. Charles Orenge (Kenya National Congress).
