We Support Nyachae, Says Kipsigis Leader

The Kipsigis community will support former Finance Minister Simeon Nyachae's presidential bid in 2002. Former Sotik County Council chairman Augustine Kirui said the Nyaribari Chache MP was fit to lead the country.

In a telephone interview, Mr. Kirui said Mr. Nyachae's criticism of the country's government and his fight for human rights had been misunderstood as insults.

Mr. Kirui said Mr. Nyachae enjoyed support from among the Kipsigis, Luhya, Luo, Maasai and Kikuyus.

He added that Kanu Secretary-General Joseph Kamotho could do Kanu supporters a lot of good if he resigned.

Last Friday, Kisii Kanu branch chairman Geoffrey Asanyo announced the suspension of Mr. Nyachae from Kanu.

He was suspended together with MPs Jimmy Angwenyi (Kitutu Chache), and Zebedeo Opore (Bonchari) who are allegedly allied to him. Kanu headquarters also said it is likely to ratify Nyachae's suspension from the party by the branch.

Mr. Kamotho said Nyachae should realize that he is not relevant to Kanu and resign from the party annd join one of his own choice

Yesterday, Mr. Kirui said the formation of Kisii and Kipsigis alliance known as KIKI indicated that Nyachae enjoyed the community backing and dismissed Kamotho's claims that Mr. Nyachae had been rejected by other communities.
