He was reacting to allegations by some politicians from the Kisii community that the government had neglected the districts. Mr. Okemo cautioned the leaders against wasting time politicking instead of addressing important issues like the worsening education standards.
The Minister announced that Kisii, Gucha and Nyamira districts would benefit immediately from the El Nino project funds.
He was addressing a funds drive at Bogiakumu Secondary School, Bonchari constituency. He regretted that Kisii Central District, with more than 60 secondary schools, shall only send 87 students to public universities. Mr. Obure and Mr. Angwenyi differed over the Kanu leadership in Kisii with the Kitutu Chache MP describing the ruling party leadership and following in the community as "mifupa" (just but a skeleton).
"There is no credible Kanu leader to spearhead party affairs," he said adding that although he supported President Moi on many occasions, "we shall push him slowly until 2002 when his term expires".
Obure, however, urged that community leaders tolerate each other until electioneering time cautioning that the Kisii risk being isolated from the mainstream of national politics come 2002.
He told the Kisii people to learn from the other communities who despite having differences with the leadership of this country welcomed the president who in turn declared heavy assistance to their areas where he visited like the 700 million electricity in Western Province.
Mr. Opore said he was optimistic of the Kisii remaining united irrespective of the clashing views aired at various platforms. He urged his colleagues from the community to unite and address pressing issues like the falling education standards.
