Hospital cleaned up for Moi visit

Kisii District Hospital has for the last three days been spruced up in anticipation of President Moi's visit today. Beds and linen have again re- appeared at the hospital wards and the buildings painted a new.

Potholes at the hospital road have been filled and the bushes around the hospital cleared for the first time in many years.

The Minister for Health Jackson Kalweo while visiting the hospital last week said the government had made requisition for new beds and linen its effort to combat the malaria outbreak.

By yesterday, military medical officers had arrived as promised by the minister to assist in the fight against the outbreak of the disease which has killed hundreds of people and seen another 10,000 treated.

The officers are expected to erect tents for patients to ease the congestion in the hospital.

Already two Non Governmental Organisations including the Medicines Sans Frontieurs (MSF) have converted two rooms at the hospital into wards for children and female patients.

At the same time, the Minister for Local Government, Prof. Sam Ongeri yesterday joined the armed forces medics deployed at the district hospital to assess the situation.

The minister urged leaders from the area to join hands in fighting the epidemic. He commended the government for supplying adequate drugs and the much needed equipment.

He was accompanied by the area DC, Joseph Mutemi and acting Kisii Kanu branch chairman, Geoffrey Asanyo.
