Two Killed As 8 Are Injured in Four-Hour Border Clash

Two people were killed and eight others seriously injured in a weekend clash along the Trans Mara and Gucha districts border.

Samuel Onyuok Buge, 24, and David Okiagera Ontita, 18, were shot dead at Iyenga by armed raiders who were masquerading as police officers as Maasai and Kisii youths engaged in a four-hour fight.

Armed Kisii youths blocked the police from viewing the bodies at Akemo Hospital mortuary, accusing them of complicity.

Last week, a teacher at Nyangusu SDA Boarding Primary School and another person at Nyagenke village were shot dead by security personnel manning the common border for allegedly engaging in war-like activities.

Leaders from Gucha have accused the police of targeting the Kisii community for systematic elimination. Eleven people have so far been shot dead by security forces along the border since February.

Following the weekend killings, many residents living along the border condemned the Government for withdrawing a GSU contingent from Kiango market, an action they said heightened the clashes.

Councillor Andrew Mokua of Gucha's Machoge/Borabu which has been hard-hit by the clashes, accused Bomachoge, Bobasi and Kilgoris MPs of failing to convene peace meetings as directed by the President.

"It seems our MPs are happy with the on-going clashes as they cannot call any public baraza and yet many lives have been lost and property destroyed," lamented Cllr Mokua.

Cllr Michael ole Maito of Shankoe, Trans Mara, urged the Kisii to stop forcibly grazing their cattle in the neighbouring district. Gucha police boss Burudi Makokha referred journalists to his Trans Mara counterpart.

At the same time, Muslim leaders led by the Gucha/Supkem chairman Mr Musa Juma have threatened to organise various demonstration against the police brutality along the border. They accused the police of impartiality.

Mr Juma demanded the transfer of Nyanza Police boss Mr David Korir saying he had been issuing misleading reports on the border and yet he had never visited the ground to assess the situation himself.
