I Am Not Afraid of Kisii, Says President Moi

President Moi intends to spend a night in Kisii town to disprove claims that he is unpopular in the area.

He said yesterday that, far from being unpopular, he had received more votes from the Abagusii than any other presidential candidate in the last General Election.

Speaking in Kericho town on his way to Kisii, where he is expected to open the agricultural show today, the President scoffed at claims that he had fallen out with the Abagusii and that he would avoid the town.

He urged Kanu supporters to stay united within the party since, he said, it had a national outlook. He dismissed other parties as tribal outfits.

Kanu's merger with the National Development Party demonstrated the true spirit of unity, he said, and the relationship should be strengthened.

He said the NDP's manifesto was similar to that of Kanu and welcomed NDP supporters to join the party in large numbers.

President Moi was accompanied by Vocational and Training Minister Isaac Ruto, Finance Assistant Minister Charles Kirui, Permanent Secretary Zakayo Cheruiyot and Bomet Kanu secretary Nick Salat.

The President praised Kericho residents for remaining steadfast in Kanu.

The Head of State said that some African countries were faced with problems caused by poor leadership but Kenya had been stable since Independence.

The President reiterated his earlier call that poor politics led to miserable lives.
