Minister Cautions On Kisii Alliance

There were mixed reactions in Kisii to the defection of the supporters of former Finance Minister Simeon Nyachae from the ruling party. Foreign Affairs Minister Chris Obure urged caution, saying the Abagusii should carefully review the current developments in national politics.

In an apparent reference to Monday's cabinet reshuffle, the minister urged the community to stay in Kanu "which practises national politics."

He urged Kisiis not be the only Nyanza tribe to move out of mainstream politics, saying this would affect the community for years. Mr Obure said it was ridiculous to join the opposition as other communities in the province were rushing back to the ruling party.

However, Assistant Minister Joseph Kiangoi dismissed the defection of Mr Nyachae's supporters to Ford People as a belated action. He urged his supporters to reject the party.

Mr Kiangoi challenged Mr Nyachae's allies to join the main opposition parties if they wanted their community to benefit.
But the defectors, led by a former assistant minister, Mr Reuben Oyondi, maintained they had moved from the ruling party because it had abandoned the Abagusii community since the last General Election.

A former Foreign Affairs Minister, Dr Hezron Manduku, accused Kanu of forcing the community to defect by expelling elected members of Parliament.

In Nyamira District, several people led by a former assistant minister for Energy, Mr Nyarangi Moturi, announced that they had moved to a new party and were registering members.
