Medical Trainees On Strike

Kisii police are camping at the Kenya Medical Training College following a strike by the students over the weekend.

The trainees are demanding removal of their principal, Mr John Anyira and a female tutor over alleged harassment of students. Tension started after three students were suspended on disciplinary grounds. Other students boycotted meals and classes and led a protest march along Hospital Road.

They also demolished wooden barriers that had been erected to separate residential rooms for the male and female trainees.

Police led by acting OCPD, Mr Stanley Lamai and CID boss, Mr Benjamin McAduar, arrived in time to contain the situation. The students alleged that there was tribalism by some administrators, poor meals and lack of basic social amenities at the institution.

Anyira, however, said a male student had been suspended for six months for allegedly sneaking into the female hostel while two others had been sent home for disciplinary measures.

Elsewhere, over 400 students of Magena Mixed Secondary School in Gucha have gone on strike protesting alleged sexual harassment of girls by their male teachers, adds Ben Nyagaka.

The students caused excessive damage to school property worth thousands of shillings. The students broke into the principal's office and made away with a television set, headphones among other school properties.
