Leaders Quarrel Over Moi's Visit

President Moi's failure to visit Nyamira when he recently toured the region has been blamed on powerful forces in Kisii District.

Councillors Charles Sagwe, Grace Nyamongo, David Makori, Charles Maosa and George Kamanda claimed yesterday that some Kisii politicians were funding youths to wreck the party in the district.

"They are not happy that we no longer pass through them to see the head of State," Mr Sagwe said.

The President skipped Nyamira town, they claimed, because Kanu branch officials allowed "Kisii youths to lead the President during the tour".

"The President's tour was a Nyamira affair and we wonder where our Kanu officials were to allow outsiders to vet those who met the President?" Mr Mogeni asked.

Addressing reporters at the Nyamira council hall, the councillors said youths who recently urged Kanu headquarters to replace branch officials were not officials of the party.

"Mr John Mong'are, Ms Grace Nyanchama and Mr Peter Onyancha are not Kanu youth leaders in the district at any level. We have confidence in our branch chairman Mr Joseph Kiangoi and his entire team," Mr Sagwe said.

The youths were also quoted saying that former ambassador Sospeter Mageto was sidelined during the recent changes made in the branch for fear that he was eyeing the West Mogirango parliamentary seat.

In another rejoinder, the district Kanu presidential elections coordinator Daniel Mogeni and West Mogirango sub-branch treasurer Raphael Achira defended the youths saying they were mistreated and discriminated during the President's visit.

They claimed in a statement that Kisii district youths were treated well at Ekerenyo divisional headquarters while Nyamira Kanu youths were told to wait for the head of state at the district headquarter in vain.

Mr Mogeni and Mr Achira said the West Mogirango Kanu officials have failed to revitalise the party as they embarassed the party when they included Ford-K councilors Alloyce Abuga and Thomas Nyairo during their recent Kabarak visit.
