Tea Firm Boss Denies Sale Allegations

A tea company has denied claims that it is selling its assets.

The Kenya Tea Packers (Ketepa) chairman, Mr John Nyakarama, yesterday said the company's board of directors had not approved the sale of any property.

He was reacting to a statement in a section of the Press saying the company was selling its printing press. He termed the statement malicious and unfounded, adding that it was meant to create "despondency among shareholders".

He was speaking to the Press in Kericho after a directors' meeting. They were drawn from Kisii, Nyamira and Gucha districts.

A Tegat Factory director, Mr William Kettienya, had accused Mr Nyakarama of being influenced to sell the printing press.

Meanwhile, the company's 48 directors said they only discussed how to oversee the "threatened tea market" as a result of the September 11 terrorist attacks in the United States.

Two directors, Mr Zacharia Nyaranga and Mr Ndovu Moseti, who spoke on behalf of the others, criticised Mr Kettienya for "purporting to speak on our behalf". They said Mr Kettienya did not participate at the meeting. They told him to solve problems at Tegat Factory.
