As a result of the skirmishes, mobs have erected barricades on roads leading in and out of Kisii and Kisumu, forcing police to escort passenger vehicles out of the region.
Borabu DC Asha Kiiva confirmed the fresh flare-up, saying that the motive of the attacks was still not very clear.
The man killed in the border clashes was identified as Mr Abuya Nyaundi, aged 28. His badly mutilated body was taken to Nyansiongo Hospital Mortuary.
Critically injured
His father, Mr Sagero Omweri, 82, was critically injured and is undergoing treatment at Kisii District Hospital while another relative, Mr Jacob Sagero, was transferred to the Kenyatta National Hospital for specialised treatment.
Scores of others suffered arrow and spear injuries during the clashes between the neighbouring communities.
Houses and property were also reduced to ashes during the attacks.
“People who stay close to the border have fled to safer areas,” said a provincial administrator.
In Kisii, vehicles plying the Kisii-Nairobi route were Sunday provided with armed escort after fresh blockades were erected on the route.
The buses and vans plying the route were given police escort from Keroka Town as travellers, most of them students going back to school, jammed Kisii Town.
