Stop Chaos, ODM Backers Told

Thirty Orange Democratic Movement MPs and ODM-Kenya officials from Rift Valley and Nyanza provinces Tuesday asked their supporters to stop engaging in violence.

They asked President Kibaki to avoid selective administration of justice in the areas affected by election violence. Led by ODM Pentagon member William Ruto, and MPs Lorna Laboso (Sotik), Peris Simam (Eldoret South) and Gusii region MPs Omingo Magara, Chris Obure, Dr Robert Monda and Momoima Onyonka among others, they said they are extremely disturbed by the violence in the county following the elections.

They said ODM and its leader, Mr Raila Odinga, have always called for peaceful demontrations and that violence has no place in their leadership. They claimed their messages of peace were not reaching the targeted audience because the Government had gagged the media. The MPs added that individual members have made efforts to bring calm in the troubled areas, but the system has been an impediment to those efforts.

"On January 5, MPs Kipkalya Kones and Mr Magara made a series of stops by chopper on the Narok-Sotik road preaching peace. The trip gave positive results as the roads were opened, but as they moved to Borabu District, the pilot was instructed by the Government to reroute to Nairobi or else the chopper risked being shot down," they said. ODM-Kenya leaders had claimed that their homes and property were destroyed for allegedly backing Vice-President Kalonzo Musyoka.

At the same time, ODM-Kenya youth chairman, Mr Tom Okwaro Apollo, said although frustration and high hopes had made the youth to feel sidelined, the Government would work without discrimination.

Support any party

He asked the youths engaging in protests to understand that politics was not the end of life. Mr Apollo, whose parents home was razed in Migori, said Kenyans had a right to support any party. He said it was important to recognise the winner of elections and forge healthy alliances.

He said it was unfortunate that most victims of mass action were students and jobless youths. He said major political issues should be left to President Kibaki, Mr Odinga and Mr Musyoka since they were willing to negotiate.
