Send GSU to Borabu, says district officer

A district officer wants General Service Unit personnel to help quell the violence on the Sotik-Borabu border.

Borabu DO Moses Gicharu said they had reinforcements of security personnel from neighbouring districts, but the violence continued to intensify on the borders stretching to Bomet District.

He said they had recommended that the GSU crack squad be sent to the area to help curb the escalating violence that has led to the death of over 10 people. He said there has been tension, but the killing of Ainamoi MP David Kimutai Too only heightened the spirit of revenge.

Chepilat Market was destroyed as houses were burnt and businesses closed, Mr Gicharu said, adding that the clash-related losses could run into billions of shillings.

Stock theft

Relative and friends have been hosting displaced people since no official camp has been established.

The DO said the clashes can be traced to the history of stock theft on the border, but the levels of violence have been compounded by post-election tension and the MP’s killing.

Rift Valley provincial commissioner Hassan Noor Hassan has called for an immediate end to the violence in the two districts.

Mr Hassan said on Saturday that more security personnel would be deployed to the affected areas.

The PC said police posts would be built to check rising insecurity on the boundary, as demanded by the communities in the two regions.

He made the remarks at a series of peace meetings in Sotik, Mogoiywet and Mekenene areas of Rift Valley and Nyanza provinces.
