State asked to restore peace in border region

Members of Parliament from Rift Valley and Nyanza provinces yesterday called on the government to urgently restore peace along the borders of Nyamira, Sotik, Borabu and Bomet districts.

The MPs Omingo Magara, Chris Obure, Charles Onyancha, Robert Monda, William Ruto and Henry Kosgey also accused some provincial administrators of fuelling violence in the region.

“The government has a hand in the skirmishes and wants to show that there’s trouble in ODM areas to attain certain objectives,” Mr Magara told journalists in Nairobi.

The leaders called on their constituents to stop the violence. Mr Ruto said ODM had asked MPs from the region to team up and address security situation.

“We are still waiting for response from them. Security issues go beyond parties and communities,” he said.

He added that the Rift Valley and Nyanza provincial commissioners had a role to ensure peace in the areas and take action against partisan administrators.

Mr Ruto claimed that one district commissioner was “an agent of death and destruction along the Nyanza/Rift Valley borders”.

He added that police had killed 11 people in Eldoret on Thursday and Friday and nine others in Kericho. It was inhuman, he said, for police to use live bullets on an unarmed protesters.

Live bullets

“The skirmishes and killings in some areas are because of police move to use live bullets, and omission by provincial administration,” Mr Ruto said.

He urged Kenyans to refrain from taking the law into their own hands.

There has been fierce fighting between communities living along the borders of Nyanza and Rift Valley provinces since the disputed results of last year’s presidential elections were announced on December 30.

The fighting was worsened by Thursday’s killing of Ainamoi MP David Kimutai Too in Eldoret.

Yesterday, Mr Magara said Mr Too was killed by a security agent and that people should not direct their anger at the suspect’s community.

He called on President Kibaki and Internal Security minister Prof George Saitoti to assure all Kenyans of security.
