Classes yet to resume in Sotik and Borabu

Lessons are yet to resume in schools on the troubled Borabu/Sotik districts border. Four of the schools — Elimu Academy, St Ann Academy, Koiyet and Ribaita primary schools were looted, vandalised and burnt down by raiders. Elimu, St Ann and Koiyet are in Sotik District while Ribaita is in Borabu. Arsonists reduced the schools to piles of rubble.

Koiyet and Ribaita are public schools while the others are private schools. And the proprietor of Elimu Academy, former assistant minister David Kombo, has moved the institution to Kisii Town and more than 100 pupils have reported for lessons out of the 300 enrolled.

Close to boundary

Lessons have also been disrupted at Kebuse primary school in Borabu. The school is close to the two districts’ boundary.

A Nation spot check on the border revealed that lessons had resumed at Isoge, Ensakia, Kineni, Memisi, Esise, Kahawa and Mogusii primary schools.

Attendance by students was, however, low. Area district commissioner Asha Kiiva toured the troubled area and assured residents that calm had been restored following violence, which resulted in about 20 deaths and more than 400 houses burnt.

District education officer John Musango also toured schools in the area.
