The vehicles were pushed into a river bend and reduced into mangled wreckages. Kisii DC, Mr Chris Musumbu was among the first to arrive at the scene, and said he had counted up to 21 bodies by the time we went to press.Musumbu said more bodies were still trapped in the vehicles, adding the death toll could be higher. "There are more trapped in the vehicles and the death toll could rise," he said.
There were gory scenes as police and Good Samaritans struggled to rescue the survivors and remove the bodies from the twisted metals. An eyewitnes, Mr Richard Kibagendi, said: "The driver of the trailer appeared to have lost control of the vehicle. It hurtled down the road and hit the three vehicles."
He added: "The trailer then drove over the matatus with the passengers trapped inside. I could hear women and children wailing." This is the second major road accident in Nyanza Province in two days. On Tuesday, 20 people were killed and 21 others injured when a trailer hit a Citi Hoppa bus near Yala along the Kisumu-Busia Highway.
