Top Runners Eye Gucha Race Title

An impressive field of runners will take to the road in today morning's Safaricom Saasa Tariff 10km road race in Ogembo town, Gucha District. The top runners from across the country will battle for honour today in the cold and chilly weather. For the last one week, the weather in the area has been extremely cold due to the current heavy rains.

Among top runners who have confirmed their participation, according to Athletics Kenya Nyanza South branch chairman Peter Angwenyi, are last year's winner Edward Muge, Japan-based James Getanda, and John Mutai, who finished fifth in the half marathon during the All Africa Games in Algeria.

Others are Boaz Mayaka of Kebirigo Athletics Club, France-based George Morara and Wesley Ochoro. Wilson Chebet and Alice Mogire, winners of last month's edition in Kisii, are also expected to defend their titles. With world youth champion Mercy Cherono also in attendance, the women's race is expected to be close.

Hundreds of runners yesterday morning braved the cold weather and drizzle to train at the Kisii Golf Club. Jackline Kemunto, who was second in the Kisii Super Tariffic road race in Kisii declared: "It will be a do-or-die race for me, I must win the grand prize because I have done enough preparations."

The race will start at Getumo along the Kisii-Kilgoris road and finish at Mananasi trading centre. The star attraction will be multiple paralympics world record holder Henry Wanyoike, who on Tuesday signed to take part in the race.

Yesterday, Kiptenden Athletics Club promised to send a strong team of 15 runners to the event, which is organised by Kebirigo Athletics Club.
