Kenya not ready for fragmentation, says President Kibaki

President Mwai Kibaki on Monday took his re-election campaign to Gusii where thousands of local residents assured him of victory in the general election.

The president arrival took the area by storm as thousands upon thousands of wananchi lined up the presidential route to cheer him-on on his way to Kisii town.

The wananchi carrying placards written ‘Kibaki tena' and the president portraits mobbed the president as he made a triumphant entry into the Gusii stadium.

Addressing them President Kibaki made it clear that Kenya would not be balkanized on regional basis. Noting that all regions in the country were interdependent, President Kibaki said it would be most unfortunate for anyone to try to isolate themselves from the rest of Kenyans by pursuing a regional agenda.

"This issue becomes even more absurd when proponents of regionalism threaten to deport other Kenyans settled elsewhere back to their home districts." Said the President, The President stated that the law was very clear on ownership of property and freedoms of associations adding no-one could interfere with those rights.

President Kibaki told Kenyans to be wary of people who talk about introducing unworkable policies at this time of electioneering in a bid to gain political mileage. In the same vein he told them to exercise their constitutional rights by electing visionary people to leadership positions come the election in December.

"I urge you the Kenyan electorate to turn out in large numbers during the polling day to elect people of integrate," he said. On local development, President Kibaki invited investors to put up a banana processing plant in Kisii town saying this will add value to the bananas that the Gusii region is a major producer. The President also announced that the Kenya Cooperative Creameries-KCC would build a new processing plant in the area to process and provide a ready market for the milk produced in the area.

On the Youth Fund the President noted that it had been increased to Ksh 2 billion and urged the Youth in the Country to come up with viable projects that will attract funding. He also spoke about the Kisii District Hospital saying it will be expanded to serve the people of the greater Kisii and the surrounding areas more effectively.

By a show of hands the massive crowds promised to vote for president Kibaki for a second term in office. Local leaders including cabinet ministers Simeon Nyachae and Henry Obwocha said the Kisii's were a principled people who could not be swayed from their convictions easily.

Thus they noted the Gusii region had realized unparalleled development during President Kibaki's leadership and would re-elect him to sustain the tempo. Other speakers were the KANU National chairman Uhuru Kenyatta and Professor Sam Ongeri. Also present were Ministers John Michuki, Mutua Katuku, Gedion Konchella and local MPs among others.
