The Government was treating the Kisii incident seriously a crime, and would not condone electoral violence, the Michuki said in his Kangema constituency.
MPs William Ruto and Omingo Magara and aspirant Chris Bichage were injured by thugs attending a fundraising meeting presided over by Roads Minister, Mr Simeon Nyachae. Addressing a press conference at the Kangema DO’s office, Michuki said any one found to be responsible for the chaos would be prosecuted "regardless of his position in the society".
While Michuki conceded it was illegal for people to carry weapons in public, he could not explain why police did not arrest the thugs, who attacked the MPs. The attackers were armed with assorted dangerous weapons. They wore Ford-People T-shirts.
"It is true that the youth should not have been allowed to be armed in public but let us not pre-empt the investigation," he said. Michuki, however, admitted that ministers Nyachae and Henry Obwocha had breached common practice by elected leaders who routinely inform their colleagues when visiting their areas, out of respect and courtesy. " It is a common practice that out of respect, MPs are usually informed when others are visiting their constituencies," he said.
Narc-Kenya headquarters also condemned the violence, but blamed Orange Democratic Movement supporters for setting the trend by attacking politicians Ms Nazlin Umar in Kisumu last month and Mr Stanley Livondo when he visited Kibera, last week. Also condemning the violence on Ruto, Magara and Bichage was Mr Mwita Chaacha, the ODM Kuria parliamentary aspirant. He was addressing mourners at Getong’anya village, during the burial of Jacqueline Mwita, who was his campaign manager. Chaacha said an ODM government would ensure security for all.
Kajiado North ODM parliamentary aspirant, the Reverend Moses ole Sakuda, also said: " This is the kind of violence and insecurity an ODM Government will not tolerate. "Those who perpetuated this crime should be arrested and prosecuted, he said. He spoke to The Sunday Standard from Kajiado. Sakuda is running against Prof George Saitoti, the Minister for Education. Director of special progammes, Mr Sande Oloo, claimed that ODM rivals had zoned some areas while they insisting on freedom of movement.
