Anyona's Family Seeks Protection

The family of former Kitutu Masaba MP George Anyona has sought protection from the Government during his burial scheduled for Sunday.

Anyona's widow, Mokeira, his son Kwame and in-laws Alex Moseti and Dr Isoe Ochoki expressed fears that some people may disrupt the burial like it happened last December 7 when the funeral was initially to take place.

Nyamira DC Jamleck Baruga, who received the family yesterday in his office, assured them that they would get the protection sought.

The DC said the family had the biggest part to play in the burial and warned those who intended to interfere with the process that they would face the full force of the law.

Kwame said later that they had asked the funeral committee from Nairobi which organised the first abortive burial to come and complete the task.

He said as a family, they had experienced mental torture and embarrassment since their father died and it was a high time they laid him to rest in peace.

He asked leaders who had worked with their late father in helping Kenyans achieve the second liberation to join in bidding him the final farewell.

Kwame, however, cautioned those leaders who were scheming to sabotage the burial to keep off saying the family was determined to bury Anyona this time round.

He said the burial date was set during a family meeting which was chaired by Anyona's step-brother Stephenson Mageto, and he hoped the latter would not bring any new complications come the funeral. The leader of the Kenya Social Congress died last November but his burial was stopped through a court injunction obtained by Mageto.

Mageto said his brother's name had to be cleared first over allegations of embezzling Sh2.3 million belonging to Chachumba women's group.

However, even after the National Bank in Kisii, where the said money was banked, vindicated Anyona, it still took several months before the burial date could be set. Anyona's widow, who looked fatigued yesterday, said everybody was welcome to the burial but those who were out to derail should keep off.
