Meraba Sisters Outwit Rivals At Gusii Track Meeting

Sisters Nyanchoka Meraba and Caroline Meraba on Friday ran a technical race to win the 10 000 metres in this year's Nyanza South athletics championships at Gusii stadium.

Nyanchoka who is the eldest, won the race clocking 37:21.56 ahead of her sibling timed at 37:35.77.

The sisters had to employ tactics to beat Rael Michira, who had led in the final three laps, to third position with 38:35.41.

In the men's category Wesley Ochoro stole the show as he comfortably won the race in 30:14.01 followed by Moses Orengo (30:37.62) and Joseph Amenya in 30:44:44.

The 3,000m steeplechase title was won by Peter Anyona in 9:03:72 followed closely by David Ongera (9:16:37) and Jason Nyachoti in 9:19:37.

The 5,000m women honours went to Phyllis Moriti who returned 17:08.05 defeating Tinega Jeriah (17:20:14) and Norah Maraga (18:07:14) to third and fourth positions.

The women's 2,000 steeplechase was won by Marcela Rogito (7:49:89) followed closely by Nancy Mokindu (7: 50:18) and Phyllis Okindu (8:39.28).

The winners of the one-day championshipwill represent the region in this year's national championship in Nairobi in July.

The competitors were drawn from Nyamira Kisii Gucha, Kuria Suba, Homa Bay Rachuonyo and Migori districts.

In South Rift Valley, Kericho district retained the South Rift title for the second year at Kericho Green Stadium on Saturday.

Kericho, under coach Gabriel Kiptanui, managed to collect 255 points after their women's athletes amassed 136 points and the men 113 points.

The champions were followed by Bomet District who had 180 points, Bureti (174), Nakuru (101), Koibatek (88) and Trans Mara (40).

The 1,500m Poland youth championship champion Florence Chepkirui failed to make the selection when she was beaten to third position with a time of 4:40.53. The race was won by Kericho's Emmy Chepkirui who clocked 4:39.94 while Bureti's Mercy Chelangat took second position with 4:40.53.

A major upset was in the women's 5,000m walk where all the competitors were disqualified for running.

Meanwhile, Taita Taveta collected 251 points in athletics to top the Coast provincial secondary schools championships at the Mombasa Municipal Stadium on Friday. Kwale took the second position with 190 points while Malindi were third with 141 points.

Khamisi Omar from Malindi won the 10,000m race in 32 minutes 25.24 seconds followed by John Bosco (Kwale) in 24:20.25 while Suleiman Lughanje (Kilifi) was third in 34:22.41.

In the girls' 5,000m, Florence Mwalugo clocked 19:34.14 to win the race. She was followed by Flora Maganga (Taita Taveta) 19:58.84 while Jane Issac (Kwale) was third in 21:47:74.

Athman Mwazingane (Kwale) won the 10,000m walk in 49:30.14 followed by Patrick Chacha (Kwale) who clocked 49:48.18 while Mramba Justine (Malindi was third in 52:20.20.
