It is Total Anarchy in Kisii As Govt Watches

For evil to flourish, all it takes is for good people to keep quiet. FTF and those who work on it do not claim to be good. But we cannot shut our eyes as our brothers and sisters are being murdered daily in Kisii by people who apparently have the protection of the provincial administration.

About a month ago, FTF highlighted the nefarious activities of a group calling itself Kisungu sungu. The DC, Mr Abdullahi Leloon, responded and claimed that those who were against the vigilante were former criminals who want it disbanded so that they can commit crimes. He said he couldn't disband it because he is not the one who formed it.

We immediately pointed out that the DC had failed to address the concerns of the people. Which were those concerns? That people claiming to be members of a vigilante group have been committing crimes against the people there; that they have killed; that they have burned people's houses with impunity.

As the DC held on to his line, anarchy continued in Kisii. These are the results: early in the week the group known as Kisungu sungu chopped off a man's head and seriously burnt his son.

Earlier the man, Charles Musoromani, had recorded a statement with the police, complaining that his life was in danger. A few days later, his head was chopped off by the group that accused him of being a thief. His son was burnt and some other members of the victim's family were roughed up.

These are the facts that Leloon, the head of the district's security committee, refuses to face. And apparently the provincial administration whose minister in charge is Dr Chris Murungaru does not think that there is something wrong in Kisii. As we argue elsewhere in our editorial, this is a situation that must be arrested and treated much more seriously than how Leloon and his people are going about it.

Insecurity in Kisii is not peculiar. There are other places experiencing the same problems. But when it is committed with the full connivance of the provincial administration, members of a government that swore to protect people's lives and property, there is a general sense of displacement.

Let's face the facts. Leloon cannot protect the people of Kisii. It is high time Murungaru stepped in to protect the people from Kisungu sungu.
