Police Apologise Over Kisii Killings Blunder

Police yesterday apologised for saying that Mr Evans Omari Sianyo was one of the seven alleged criminals gunned down in Kisii a fortnight ago.Nyanza police boss Daniel Chesimet said the name of Sianyo was included by mistake in the list of seven suspects who were gunned down.

Chesimet told Sianyo that he was free to return home home, as the police were not out to eliminate him.

Mr Chesimet who was speaking in Kisumu, however, maintained that the other suspects who were killed were criminals. A CID officer gunned down the seven suspects during an incident described by the police as " robbery mission by the criminals".Chesimet said the police "confused" the name of one of the suspect who had been gunned down with Sianyo as he had been seen in the area before the shooting incident.

He said police were not trailing Sianyo as they had killed the identified criminals."Let him come back to Kisii from his hide-out in Nairobi because we are not out to kill him," said the PCIO.Chesimet said Sianyo could report directly to his office at the Nyanza Provincial Police Headquarters in Kisumu to get a personal assurance from him.

"He should stop hiding as police are not looking for him. Let him come back to Kisii," said the PCIO.Sianyo came out of the hiding and visited the East African Standard newsroom in Nairobi on Sunday to tell his story.

He accused the police of plotting to eliminate him after they released his name as one of the suspects gunned down.

Rights groups described the killing of the seven suspects as extra-judicial execution by the police. One other man, James Kang'ethe, whose name appears on the list is also said to be alive. The mix-up of the names, said human rights organisations, seemed to confirm earlier claims that the police had a list of those to be eliminated before they shot dead the seven suspects.

Sianyo said the inclusion of his name in the list of the suspects published in the East African Standard only confirmed his fears that there was a plan by the police to eliminate him.Yesterday, the PCIO said the police had no ill motive against Sianyo as he was a free man.Chesimet urged Sianyo not to panic, saying he was not in any danger from the police.
