This means that only 13,204 were registered for this year's Kenya Certificate of Primary Education examinations which start next week.
District education officer James Ochieng attributed the drop-out rate to the tendency by school heads to force pupils to repeat in Standard Seven.
"Headmasters force pupils to repeat and promote only those they consider to be bright with the aim of posting better overall mean marks," he said.
The official cautioned the teachers against forcing pupils to repeat classes. He was speaking at Kisii Primary School yesterday during the release of this year's district mock examination results.
And out of the 13,204 registered candidates, only 12,796 sat the mock evaluation test. No reason was given for failure by the rest to be examined.
Imperial Primary School, with 11 entries, led in the mock examination, followed by Rigoko, Itibo PAG, United Efforts and Tabaka Girls.
Ekiendege primary of Suneka Division at position was the best performer in public institutions.
The DEO who released the results said schools with minimal sponsorship and parents' interference had improved in their performances.
