Police Shoot Student Dead

A form One student was yesterday shot dead by an Administration Policeman while fleeing from riots at Nyatieko Secondary School in Kisii.

Master Paul Okiro, 15, was shot in the back and was pronounced dead on arrival at the district hospital at 9 am.

Kisii police boss Julius Mwakule said three police constables attached to Nyatieko chief's camp had been arrested over the shooting.

Trouble at the school started on Sunday when a group of Form Three and Four students were barred from their evening studies by the school's management.

Yesterday morning, the students confronted the headmaster, Mr Thomas Obiye, accusing him of masterminding the transfer of his deputy, Mr Philip Soita.

Some of the students then pelted Obiye with stones, forcing him to take refuge at a neighbouring pastor's house.

The police were summoned and three APs responded. A commotion ensued, and one officer shot the boy as he fled.
