Schoolgirl Steals Show

Phyllis Ongori a schoolgirl based in Japan caused a sensation during Saturday's Nyanza South Cross Country Championships when she led from start to finish in the four kilometre short race at Kisii's Gusii stadium. in Kisii at the weekend.

Phyllis Ongori who is based at Kamanashi Gakuin High School won the race in 41:06.22 easily beating favourite Damaclyne Matwere of Nyamira who clocked 14:45.64 while Linet Nyamwamu took third position in 15:13.44.

Former world junior cross country champion Philip Mosima failed in his attempt to make it to the national cross country championships when he dropped out of the 12-kilometre race after six kilometres. The race was won by Elijah Nyabuti in 36:14.18, Josephat Ongeri of Nyamira came second in 36:28.84 while France-based Wesley Ochoro was third in 36:46.84.

Mosima blamed the organisers for poor planning, terming the abrupt change of venue course from the Kisii golf course to Gusii stadium as unfavourable.

Primary school pupil Alice Mogire won the six kilometre junior women's event in 21:13.11 she was closely followed by Peris Monda of Nyota in 21:35.00 while Philis Moriti of Tendere came third in 22:15.76.

Charles Omuya of Metamaywa clocked 11:37.08 to win the four kilometres open race. Obed Gisemba of Kisii came second in 11:48.90 while Owen Magori of Gucha took third position in 11:51.99.

Grace Momanyi won the eight kilometre senior women's race in 27:52.47; Rose Nyangacha of Gucha came second in 28:28.40 while Eunice Orwaru of Kisii came third in 29:13.30.

Holland based Valentine Orare clocked 24:04.84 to win the eight kilometre junior men's race. Schoolboy Evans Mayoyo was second in 24:10.32 followed by Jason Mosoti in 24:12.90.

The runners complained of bad weather and the poor course at the stadium which they said had sharp corners.

But AK Nyanza South secretary Peter Oenga said they had formed a formidable team to represent the province during the national trials at the Ngong racecourse this coming Friday.

Gucha won the overall title with 100 points, Kisii came second with 104 while former champions Nyamira came third with 141 points while Kuria came last without a score. Migori and Suba Districts failed to turn up.
