Temu Memorial Race in Nyamira This Weekend

Athletics Kenya's Nyanza branch will this weekend host the inaugural Naftali Temu Memorial road race in Nyamira.

Branch secretary Peter Oenga yesterday said preparations for Sunday's meeting in honour of Kenya's first track gold medallist are complete.

Oenga said the 10-kilometre road race would start at Metamaywa Shopping Centre and end at Nyaronde on the main Keroka-Sotik highway.

The three-kilometre event for juniors will start at Amakara area.

He said the race has attracted athletes from the newly-formed Kebirigo Runners Club and the Nyansiongo Athletics Club.

Individual athletes from the neighbouring Nyamira, Kisii and Gucha districts are expected to form the bigger percentage of the field.

Athletics Kenya's head office has donated a trophy to be awarded to the winner of the main race. Oenga appealed to more sponsors to back the event.

"We expect a full house because the running course is smooth and the timing and day is also favourable to the athletes from the area," Oenga said.

He also said Olympians would also run in a two-kilometre race.

Those expected include Nyantika Maiyoro, Charles Asati, Juma Okayo, Ezekiel Nyamao, Robert Ouko, Dan Omwansa, Kipchoge Keino and Mark Boit.
