Suspects Die in Police Cells

Two suspects who had been locked up at Ogembo Police Station cells in Gucha District have died.

The first suspect ,Abel Mekenye, was found dead in the cells by police officers on duty yesterday morning as they opened up for the suspects to clean the station before being taken to court.

The second suspect, Lameck Tengeya, who collapsed inside the cells, died on his way to Kisii District Hospital.

The circumstances under which the suspects, separately booked in with the offences of burglary and stealing, died was unclear.

Mekenyae and Tengeya had stayed at the cells for three and four days respectively.

Area police boss Remis Warui told journalists in his office that investigations had been launched to establish the cause of the deaths. Warui said it was too early to speculate on the cause of the deaths.
