200 Schools Are Ordered Closed

The Nation has at the same time learnt that senior education officials and teachers, who have been running the schools, are counting their losses following the new development.
The ministry of Education closed about 200 private schools, which were operating illegally and were in deplorable conditions.
Kisii DEO James Ochieng said 115 schools were closed in the area while more than 100 were shut down in Nyamira where the exercise was going on, according to the DEO, Mr Wilbert Nyangweso.
They said most of the closed schools belonged to teachers and education officials, adding: "We are not going to spare
Parents of the affected pupils were advised to look for alternatives, leading to an influx in public schools. A survey by the Nation in some schools revealed that some classes were having more than 60 pupils while in some cases teaching was done under shades.
The Nyamira District education board is expected to sit tomorrow to review the closure. Some schools have petitioned against the closure and their cases are expected to be discussed.
Mr Nyangweso said most of the schools had poor ventilation and were situated behind bars and shops.
