Rude Reception for Varsity Chief As Students Protest

University students besieged their vice chancellor accusing him of discriminating against their campus in the distribution of learning aids.

The rowdy students of Egerton University's Kisii campus told Prof Ezra Maritim that life would be better for them if he was replaced.

The VC's speech was interrupted several times with students breaking into a popular political tune "Yote yawezekana bila wewe (Everything is possible without you)" as they jeered him.

Amidst the booing Prof Martim said: "It is your right to dislike somebody but you should respect one's responsibility". He visited the institution four days after the students went on strike demanding his resignation for failing to address their problems.

Prof Maritim, who was on the campus for the inauguration of the students union, had earlier been kept waiting for two hours in a hall with other dignitaries as the students declined to assemble for his address.

The VC told them the University Council considered student population and number of faculties before allocating resources.

He got into more trouble when he said the University Council had resolved to buy two buses for the Njoro main campus this year and a minibus for the Kisii campus in the 2003-2004 financial year.

It took the persuasion of deputy VC in charge of research and extension, Prof S. A Abdulrazak, the principal, Prof Sarima Chacha, and other senior university officials to convince them to listen to the VC.

The students were protesting against lack of course books, a bus, poor state of hostels, and other learning materials
