The former MP who represented the area between 1988 and 1992 is not related to immediate former South Mugirango MP James Omingo Magara, whose elder brother Enock Magara died after a road accident in October 2000 while he was the area representative.
Mr (Omingo) Magara was among the first Kisii leaders in Kisii to visit the home to console the bereaved family.
The body of Mr Magara, 60, was found about 50 metres from his residence at Menyinkwa Estate, about four kilometres from the town centre.
Police and villagers suspected his killers abducted him at 8pm soon after buying a loaf of bread from a kiosk near his house.
He contested the recent Ford-People nomination but lost to Mr Joel Onyancha.
Unlike other losers, Mr Magara remained in the Simeon Nyachae party and was one of the key campaigners of Mr Onyancha and presidential candidate Nyachae in the area.
It was said that earlier in the day, he had visited Mr Onyancha at his residence, also in Kisii Town, to map out campaign strategies.
The body had a single deep wound, inflicted by a sharp object with a twisted neck and pricked eyes.
There were no signs of any struggle at the scene, and police and family members suspected the murder might have been committed elsewhere before the body was dragged to the neighbourhood where it was dumped.
The body was discovered at 6 am by his wife, Priscah and daughter Ruth.
His wife said the body had facial injuries and blood was oozing from his mouth.
Mr Onyancha, who spoke to the Press at the slain leader's home, said they had parted at 6pm on Saturday and agreed to team up yesterday for a campaign rally in the constituency.
The kiosk operator said he bought a loaf of bread at 8pm and walked in the direction of his house.
Yesterday morning, a loaf of bread suspected to be the one the leader had bought was found in a nearby thicket about five kilometers from the scene where the body was found, raising suspicion that the murder could have been committed there.
Mr Magara leaves behind a widow and five children - two boys and three girls.
The body was taken to Hema hospital mortuary by the police.
