Mr Joe Maina, the area manager, told delegates during a meeting at the Kisii Farmers Cooperative Union headquarters that the new department would enable the KPCU to send only clean samples to Nairobi.
"Our next step is to bring the buyers of coffee to the producer areas and that will be done once the ongoing planning to establish a liquoring department is complete early next year," Maina told the representatives from from 29 primary coffee cooperative societies.
At the same time, the KPCU official said more than 80 per cent of the middlemen who had been reducing the coffee farmers' earnings had been eliminated following the enactment of the new Coffee Act.
The meeting was told that KPCU was also planning to establish coffee nurseries and distribute seedlings to eight districts covered by the station.
It also intends to put up a computerised moisture analyser machine which will ensure that only properly dried coffee beans are sent to the market.
This is expected to improve the quality of coffee.
