Nyachae Vows to Keep Ford People Vibrant

Ford People leader Simeon Nyachae yesterday appeared in the public for the first time since the General Election and declared that his party would remain active.

He said he had no regrets over his performance, adding: "I was personally satisfied with my performance, which I can't compare with Narc's, which had the support of 15 different parties."

Mr Nyachae won the Nyaribari Chache parliamentary seat and was third in the presidential race with 345,019 votes. His party won 14 parliamentary seats besides the one nominated MP the party is entitled to.

Mr Nyachae, who went to the UK soon after the election results were announced, was addressing the public at Keumbu divisional headquarters in Kisii where he donated drugs worth Sh1.3 million and books worth Sh789,000 to health centres and primary schools respectively.

At the same time, Mr Nyachae said he did not expect the Narc Government to sideline the Abagusii for voting for his party. He said he had no hard feelings against President Mwai Kibaki, who was the winner with 3,646, 713 votes, saying the new regime needed goodwill from all Kenyans to deliver.

"The Narc Government, like a newly wed couple, needs a grace period before being assessed on its performance in regard to development pledges made to the electorate during the electioneering period," he said.

"Kenyan politics is driven by tribal influence and we as Abagusii did what other Kenyan communities could have done in a bid to have their own son win an election.

"The Luos stood by their own Jaramogi Oginga Odinga soon after he fell out with President (Jomo) Kenyatta in 1966, and remained in the Opposition until now that they have (re-)joined the government, he said.

He added: "We will not beg for anything from the government simply because we are in the Opposition but expect to be treated fairly like other taxpayers."
